We all know that green is the new black. It is the most popular, trendy and earth-shatteringly important subject for many people today. It is more important than ever these days to make sure that the home we live in is as green as possible and doesn’t lose any unnecessary heat or energy.
One of the best ways to make sure that your home is as eco-friendly as possible is to take a walk around your house and see whether there are any improvements that can be done straight away. Often there can be inexpensive little changes which can have an instant impact on the carbon footprint of your house. Are there any drafts getting in under doors or through cracks any where? Take a look at your windows, are they single or double glazed? Take a look at the rooms in your house, are they being heated unnecessarily? Or are the lights left switched on around the house in unoccupied rooms?
Having a look at these points can have a great effect. If there are drafty doors in your house which let the wind whistle through them then getting draft excluders or fitting draft protectors to your doors can have a huge impact. This way you are losing less heat through your doors.
Getting double-glazing for your windows is another way of making sure that you lose less heat. This is a slightly more expensive option, but secondary double glazing options are also available. Make sure that you get the recommended pane thickness and that the gap between panes is of the right size. This will greatly reduce heat and energy loss through your windows. This is especially important because the radiators of most houses are sighted under the windows. So, in effect, the heat from your radiators goes straight out of the window. Double-glazing will stop this and will pay for itself in energy saving.
One of the greatest ways of making your home greener is by looking at how you use energy. The first step is to replace all your light bulbs with energy-efficient light bulbs. These use far less energy than the old-style tungsten bulbs and last for much longer too. They are now also much more affordable than before. This equates to saving a good sum of money in the long run. After this the next step is to make sure that you and everyone in your household switch lights and appliances and electrical equipment off when not in use. You may think that your one little light bulb will not matter if it is left on all night, but multiply this by a million households across the land and every night for ten years and you soon see how important it is that everyone joins in to switch off and save.
Another way to greatly improve your energy efficiency is to buy appliances and equipment which are green. It is possible to immediately spot which white goods have green credentials by the energy star label. At first these seem to be slightly more expensive than normal but the savings that you make mean that they pay for themselves in the long run and the benefits for the planet outweigh all other considerations. If you want to be trendy, Be Green!
