Green Living: The Tipping Point to Going Green!

Going green has become so popular that stores and websites are creeping up everywhere offering everything from chemically clean paint, to natural latex beds. Green cars, green make-up and green clothing, all for the offering. While some call it a trend, others hope that it is here to stay.

Anything that makes people more aware of their environment is a movement worth keeping. Not wanting to focus on anything negative, but the sad reality is our world is so polluted and if people don’t start to care, no one will be eating fish in twenty years. And when that happens, you can say goodbye to “Flipper’s” family, ‘because they too eat fish.

So, while some think the green movement is for granola lovers only, my suggestion would be to hop aboard and start being part of the solution instead of the problem.

In this day and age, when I see people tossing a cigarette butt or a candy wrapper, I question what has happened to that individual to make him or her so clueless. When did this person just stop caring or did they never care? Their car is perfect and their clothing immaculate, so why the cigarette butt on the street?

The tipping point stops people from caring or makes them care. When an area is pristine, it tends to stay that way and then attracts more like minded people.

How to convince India and China that they should care for the planet is the billion dollar question. They simply don’t care. Half burned bodies float down the river where children bathe and women wash clothes. China’s pollution nightmare is now everyone’s nightmare. America has also been labeled as an environmentally heedless nation and so if we are to remain a leader, we need to step up to the plate and be the change we want to see in the world.

Hard to get your children to clean up their room if yours is a mess! Pick your battles but please start somewhere. You have to care. We have to care. We aren’t here to win a popularity contest so speak up when you have a chance. Not with anger as that won’t solve anything but when you see someone litter, pick it up and look at them with kindness. Tell them that you love your country and that it hurts you to see litter.

Too many people just don’t care so those of us who do have to go the extra mile. You will be surprised how rewarding it is to be part of the solution instead of being part of the problem. Several years ago, a caring citizen would go out every day at lunch and pick up litter in a park next to his office. When asked if he was doing community work, he replied quite simply that the park didn’t deserve to be “trashed”. The very same people who had been trashing it had a revelation that day and the park hasn’t been trashed since. It doesn’t take a village; it takes one caring person who wants to make a difference. Be that catalyst and watch what it does for you.
