Drive Smarter to Save Gas

The world nowadays is very aware of the need to economize on the use of our natural resources, and as a responsible individual it is our duty to do our task of saving gas while driving. It is more reliable if you use the car daily to commute. You can also reduce the pollution and also save yourself some money in the bargain. You will be helping your own health by having to breathe less polluted air. Your car could last longer and do not need to be replaced, thus saving money and gas.

Make sure that your tires are inflated to the standard pressure set by the manufacturer. An under inflated tire presents more surface to the road and thus increases the friction to the tire when driving on the road. It will make your engine work harder and this can be as much as 25% requiring that much of extra effort for your car engine and therefore more gas. So with properly inflated tires you just save gas.

Do not run your engine on idle for more than a minute. If you’re going to wait for something or somebody for a long time, just switch off the engine. Starting your car requires as much fuel as idling it for a minute, so any period beyond this you must switch off the engine. Millions and millions of gallons of gas are wasted by people all over the world, just because they are waiting for their pizza to be delivered with their car engines idling.

There is an optimum speed that every car manufacturer suggests that you should maintain for the most efficient use of gas. This is generally between 55 and 60 miles per hour, and if you go faster than this, the consumption of gas goes up dramatically, so stick to that upper limit and save gas. If you are driving at the slower speed suggested, you also reduce tire wear and engine wear and definitely your brake liner wear when you find you have to use the brakes to slow down.

Have you still got those empty oxygen cylinders from your last sea driving expedition and still rattling around there in the trunk? Check for whatever you are carrying and see that you take out all those things that you may not need for a long time and reduce the load on your car. If the car has less weight to haul around, it will mean lesser load on the engine and thus saving your gas. Make sure that you are carrying sufficient tools to help you during a breakdown and also don’t forget the spare tire. If you have succeeded in lightening your car load by 100 pounds, just think of the billions of cars that have such an excess load and the amount of gas that can be saved if the load is removed.

The tendency to floor the gas pedal has to be resisted at all times if you want to conserve gas. A higher speed means more use of the brake pedals and extra wear and tear on the tires. You would need to change your tires earlier and that could cost you quite a packet. Being a safe and a prudent driver can only enhance your own reputation, while saving yourself some gas.
